NCFM ends ladies day at world famous Del Mar Fairgrounds covered by the North County Times – not “silly”

NCFM in the news!

NCFM NOTE: It is interesting that someone representing the world famous Del Mar Thoroughbred Club which promotes events like the Ms. Cougar Contest (older, good looking, well-healed, woman on the prowl for younger men), Ladies Hat Day, or the Ugly Dog Day (great event in my opinion) would refer to discrimination against men or NCFM as “silly”. Think about it…

This showed up today on the front page of one of San Diego Counties largest newspapers, top left hand column, adjacent to “S & P Lowers the Nations Credit Rating…

DEL MAR: ‘Ladies Day’ at track welcomes men, too

Scratch “Ladies Day” from the event card at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

No, wait. Keep Ladies Day in the gate. Just relabel the Sunday event “Ladies Day (and Gentlemen)” and the starting bell can ring.

That was the stretch-run decision by the racetrack’s marketing department after the San Diego-based National Coalition For Men complained recently that a “Ladies Day” violated state law regarding equal treatment of the sexes.

“Other than it being illegal, we have always been concerned about discrimination against men,” said Harry Crouch, coalition president and founder of the California Men’s Center. “We just find it offensive.”

Crouch’s group has been drawing a line in the turf against similar events around the region and state, citing the Unruh Civil Rights Act that guarantees full and equal access to men and women.

Crouch has the state Supreme Court backing him up, ruling in at least two cases that “ladies day”-type events violate the act.

Del Mar Senior Vice President Craig Dado said Friday that Ladies Day has been a staple at the track for six years.

“We never had any real complaints until this year, when we got a few,” he said. “So we simply said, ‘Sure, guys can come

to this also.’ About 15 to 20 percent of those who’ve attended in past years have been men.”

More than 1,000 free admission tickets were distributed by co-sponsors for the event, which is designed to attract more women to the races. The tickets note on the back that “Gentlemen are welcome as well.”

But Crouch said labeling the event as Ladies Day was simply wrong. The track doesn’t feature a “Men’s Day,” he said.

“Whenever there is any kind of discrimination, it’s not silly or minor,” he said. “The track is a very large venue, and a lot of influential people attend those races.”
