House Approves Violence Against Women Act (VAWA):

SAVE Applauds Long-Overdue Reform Measures

WASHINGTON / May 17, 2012 – The House of Representatives has passed the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act by a 222-205 margin. Responding to public discontent, H.R. 4970 contains a number of measures designed to curb widespread waste and fraud in the domestic violence field.

A recent U.S. News poll found a strong majority of persons are opposed to the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in its current form: http://www.usnews.com/debate-club/should-the-violence-against-women-act-be-reauthorized Many women have questioned the effectiveness and fairness of the existing VAWA law: http://womenagainstvawa.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Flyer-VAWA-Pro-Woman.pdf

Reforms contained H.R. 4970 include strong accountability measures, gender-inclusive language, and provisions to stem fraudulent claims of abuse by immigrants. The current VAWA law has invited immigration fraud by not allowing the US citizen accused of abuse to submit evidence that could refute the accusation.

The White House played an active role in opposing the bill. The Obama Administration issued a Statement of Administration Policy on Tuesday stating it would veto any bill that was modeled on H.R. 4970.

During Wednesday’s floor debate, sponsor Sandy Adams (R-FL) withstood numerous challenges. When informed by John Conyers (D-MI) that numerous organizations opposed her bill, she retorted, “Shame on them!”

Following passage of the bill, a number of established domestic violence organizations have reacted with anger and implied threats. The National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women called the bill “dangerous.” The National Organization for Women charged that Representatives who voted for the bill “will be judged in the public arena and at the polls in November.”

According to SAVE spokesman Philip W. Cook, “H.R. 4970 certainly is not a perfect bill. Still, passage of the House measure is a victory for victims who have been refused service in the past. It removes most sex discriminatory language.  It is also a victory for taxpayers who are tired of the ongoing reports of waste and fraud.”

SAVE thanks the many organizations and individuals who have supported VAWA reform efforts. SAVE will continue to work for ways to reform and strengthen the Violence Against Women Act: www.saveservices.org/pvra .

Bob Knows: "If HR 4970 becomes law it will result in another million men destroyed along with their families and children."

    — And if HR 4970 is not adopted, the number of casualties among men would be 20 times higher. No wonder Barack Obama and "Bob Knows" want to veto HR 4970. Both want to lecture men how to behave. Both are impostors. Politics make strange bedfellows.

Yep. If HR 4970 becomes law it will result in another million men destroyed along with their families and children. Hate cannot be condoned by decent men under any guise. The only way to oppose misandry is to demand that misandry end. There is no way to make misandry and the destruction of our families acceptable.

Wow, this is wonderful news! Now it'll be much harder for victims to be overlooked simply because of their gender. The NCFM, SAVE, and WAVE have all done excellent work for the good of EVERYONE and deserve a pat on the back, at the very least. As for the people spouting idiotic threats and critisisms… let them. When this bill proves that it is stronger than the previous could ever hope to be they'll all be eating their words. Too bad they are all far too prideful and self-rightious to admit it, but that is their problem, not ours. Today a victory, even if it was a small one, was won for the rights, freedoms, and equality of everyone. Instead of focusing on what could have turned out better we should all celebrate another step towards true gender equality. Thank you to everyone who worked hard to make it happen, we are all better off thanks to your hard work.

    Bob,

It will be much worse if the provisions of H.R. 4970 are not adopted. And, worse would almost be intolerable. Given what there was to work with those who supported the version that passed did good. In fact, those caring men and women did REAL good. We should be thanking them profusely rather than criticizing their political courage.

The hate war against families and men rolls on. Any pansy arse traitor who supports renewal of the worst anti-men, anti-family hate law ever enacted should turn in his man badge, or have it removed from him by every man who calls himself a man, by every man who cares about children and families, by every man who cares about men. No real man would ever support such vile anti-men hate for any legitimate reason. He just wouldn't.

VAWA has been based on a false premise called "gender based violence," since its inception. "Gender based violence" simply blames all males as the cause of all violence, but especially intimate partner violence. It's a spin off of gender feminist, Patriarchy theory, but IT'S ALL A BIG LIE. Yes, VAWA being based on a false premise of "gender based violence" makes it nothing more than a thin facade for a hate movement – plain and simple. That's why Joe Biden's VAWA must be reformed.

I certainly understand the pain of people who've been harmed by the VAWA hate movement, and think those victims of VAWA are deserving of understanding and compassion and more. The videos "Witch-Hunting Males" and "Los Misandry" at Youtube express that. I'm very pleased to see so many people confronting the devilish VAWA in so many ways and encourage all to continue to confront this vile abomination of law on every front it exists, until equal justice and fairness for all is returned. Maybe someday we'll have legislation to help all those innocent people who've been battered and otherwise harmed by the gross evils of VAWA. We shall overcome that hate movement someday.
