Washington State Legislative session began two weeks ago on January 11th. This year’s Legislature is the second half of Washington’s biennium session and is the short 60 day session.

Taking into consideration that we only have 60 days to pass “The Brandon Jones Act” HB 2612, and we are working on a completely new bill in comparison to the last two years, I have been determined to do things differently in utilizing more of my time to be active within the legislative process and put down my “pen” more in writing blog updates. However there are some very important and exciting things that have been going on over the last two weeks:

KOMO 4 News Investigator Tracy Vedder did a special report on Brandon Jones and CJ Abernathey’s story of Paternity Fraud which aired on January 13th, 2016. For those who did not see this story please see here:  http://komonews.com/news/komo-4-investigators/families-battle-over-so-called-paternity-fraud

The comments on KOMO’s facebook post are very telling that people obviously are as outraged about this issue as we are. Link here: https://www.facebook.com/KOMONews/posts/996117757123223

January 15th, 2016 we hosted a Stop Paternity Fraud Rally at the Olympia, WA capital. We were honored to have the prime sponsors of HB 2612 Rep. Matt Shea (4th district) and our newly dropped companion bill SB 6452 Sen. Pam Roach (31st district), as guest speakers, as well as co-sponsors of the house bill Rep. Jesse Young (26th district) and Rep. Hans Zeiger (25th district).

Watch the rally recorded live part 1 & 2 here:

*ACTION OPPORTUNITY-(If you are a WA resident please follow this link and click on the “comment on this bill” link in the upper center of the page to support this legislation and send a message directly to your local district legislators. This is the fastest and most efficient way to help support the Brandon Jones Act to Stop Paternity Fraud)

We are currently waiting on hearings to be scheduled in both the House Judiciary Committee for HB 2612, and the Senate Law and Justice Committee for SB 6452. We are hopefully that these hearings will be scheduled within the next two weeks as the cutoff for each bill’s passage out of these committees is February 5th.

*ACTION OPPORTUNITY- Please email or call the following legislators and ask that “The Brandon Jones Act” be given a hearing as soon as possible.

For HB 2612 please email The House Judiciary Committee Chair and Vice Chair:

Chairlady- Rep. Laurie Jinkins at laurie.jinkins@leg.wa.gov (360) 786-7930

Vice Chair- Rep. Christine Kilduff at christine.kilduff@leg.wa.gov (360) 786-7958

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL IN YOUR REQUEST TO THESE LEGISLATORS! Rep. Jinkins has already stated she would give the house bill a hearing the fourth week of session so make this request only as a polite reminder.

For SB 6452 please email The Senate Law and Justice Committee Chair and Vice Chair

Chair- Sen. Mike Padden at mike.padden@leg.wa.gov           (360) 786-7606

Vice Chair- Sen. Steve O’Ban at steve.oban@leg.wa.gov        (360) 786-7654

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL IN YOUR REQUEST TO THESE LEGISLATORS! Both Senator Padden and O’Ban have been supportive of this legislation for the past two years and will likely give SB 6452 a hearing. Make these a polite reminder only.

Due to my schedule in being more of an active citizen lobbyist in Olympia this year, I am keeping these posts short and to the point.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you are interested in helping fight for the passage of this legislation.

Thank you!
