1999 USA Postage Stamp PROSTATE CANCER CAMPAIGN, PLEASE HELP!
Activities are coordinated by the National Prostate Cancer Coalition (202) 463-9455. According to the NPCC, over 300,000 men will get this dreadful disease each year. Yet, our government does not consider it to be a spending priority. You can help change this by showing you care.
Background: Prostate cancer research is vital to millions of men and their families. Research efforts have produced significant breakthroughs in treatment for diseases like AIDS and breast cancer. If the federal government were to fund prostate cancer at levels similar to many other diseases, major breakthroughs and even a cure could be found.
Nearly 40,000 men will die from prostate cancer this year and 200,000 others will be newly diagnosed with the disease. Millions more have prostate cancer but have not even been diagnosed. Funding for prostate cancer research has been too low for too long. Though comprising over 15 percent of all non-skin cancer cases in the U.S., prostate cancer receives less than 4 percent of federal cancer research funding. African-American men have the highest prostate cancer incidence rate in the world. The African-American mortality rate from the disease is more than twice that of U.S. Caucasian men. A study by the National Prostate Cancer Coalition found that in 1997 alone more than $250 million in worthwhile prostate cancer research could not be conducted due to lack of financial resources.
ACTION: Call the Prostate Cancer Coalition today and ask for their literature. Make sure literature is available through your doctor's office.
ACTION: Write or call your Senator and Representative today! Tell them that Congress must dramatically increase the federal funding for prostate cancer research. Tell them that you want equity for prostate cancer research now.
Make any or all of the points included in the background, and, of course, add any of your own reasons, too. Most importantly, do it now! Thank you for your help.
