| CALIFORNIA FATHERS' RIGHTS RALLY - November 19, 2003 members of the NCFM, Los Angeles Chapter, organized a father's rights rally that was held outside of the Los Angeles County Court House.
Candidate for Governor, Warren Farrell, PhD., author of numerous books that address men's and fathers issues, was invited to be a speaker at the event. Dr. Farrell is standing in the back row (center) with the blue shirt. Marc Angelucci, NCFM-LA chapter president, is just below and to the left (red patch on dark shirt). In August 2003 a recall election for governor of California was initiated. Grey Davis was the sitting governor who was being recalled. NCFM-LA, did not endorse any particular candidate.

CONDUCTED RESEARCH - NCFM has sponsored three studies and also publishes some independent work. Specifically we have looked at how state sponsored task forces on gender bias in the courts have worked, looked at sex discrimination against men in the criminal justice system and have researched the condition of men's health in the U.S. Independent papers include how sex discrimination in the English language affects men and how to conduct men's studies. Prices for this material range from $6.00 to $25.00. A listing is available by clicking on NCFM General Store. | Education and at Boston Adult Education. In the past one of the best course in the realm of men's studies was taught by NCFM member, Eugene August, at the University of Dayton. This course ran for more than 20 yearsand was the longest running course taught from a purely male perspective - that is, taught with no apologies. This perspective has been labeled by some as the "Masculist" point of view. Other terms used are "Generalist" and "Men's Rights".

In January of 1990, Insight Magazine estimated that there were around 200 courses available in men's studies. The overwhelming majority of them are taught from a feminist perspective. In fact, they are often found in Women's Studies Departments. These courses run the gamut from hard line, "Men are the oppressor", to just hints that men have all of the power.
Dr. August has been instrumental in other regards. He has published the only complete bibliography of books written on men's issues. This year (1995) a second edition of his book was released: THE NEW MEN'S STUDIES: A SELECTED AND ANNOTATED INTERDISCIPLINARY BIBLIOGRAPHY,(Libraries Unlimited, Box 6633, Littleton, CO 80155). August summarizes more than 1,000 titles on men. Telephone: (800) 237-6124 week days. Check out the Bonfire Book Store (where feminists will find everything they ever wanted to burn) to find other titles or to order Dr. August's book, on-line, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. |
| Dr. August has contributed two papers, which are published by the National Coalition of Free Men: 1)- Sex Discrimination Against Men in Language ($6.00) and 2)- How To Conduct Men's Studies ($6.00). ATTENDED PUBLIC HEARINGS - This is one area where we really do need more volunteers, because hearings are going on all of the time. Some of the hearings where we have been present include: The State Legislature's Joint Finance Committee Hearing on Anti-Obscenity and Pornography Laws (WI), New York State's Assembly Hearings on Child Custody Legislation, U.S. Attorneys Task Force on Family Violence (CA), Texas Gender Bias In The Courts Task Force, etc. Click here to see a list of public hearings. HELPED PRODUCE TELEVISION (AND RADIO) SHOWS - We are frequently contacted by producers of local and national network shows to help them find guests to be interviewed on topics of interest. In turn, we also suggest topics. Now, think about this: Since 1979 there have only been three news documentaries about men, yet we make up almost one half of the |

| population: 1)- 1979 the ABC - Television Network gave us Men Under Siege, 2)- in 1988, NBC gave us, Of Macho And Men, and 3)- in 2000, PBS gave us, The War On Boys, hosted by NCFM award winner, Fred Barnes. Because of so many "feminists" in its employ, very few PBS stations elected to carry it. The first two shows were heavily dependent on the resources provided by the National Coalition of Free Men. The NBC show aired at 10pm on a Tuesday Night and received number 1 in the ratings. Why has there been no follow up? If any other pilot racked up a score like that, someone would have planned a series. The ratings proved that there is interest.
SPONSORED NATIONAL CONFERENCES ON MEN - In each case where we have sponsored conferences we have done it in association with others who saw the logic in airing and exploring men's issues. For our part, a very dedicated group of volunteers worked extremely hard. Our conferences have been very well attended by a nationwide audience. HAS BEEN IN THE FIGHT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS - In 2002 NCFM engaged in two projects in conjunction with other interested groups. LEARN how civilian men in AFGHANISTAN have been brutalized, while governments fight for women's rights. STOP CEDAW (Convention to Eliminate Discrimination Against Women). This was a United Nations' attempt to impose radical feminism on the United States.
SPONSORED PUBLIC MEETINGS AND SUPPORT GROUPS - Meetings, open to the general public, have been held on an on-going basis in quite a number of cities. The method used has usually been to place an ad in the local events columns and then to provide a speaker. From time-to- time this has led to the actual formation of chapters. However, as interests change and people move on the chapter system has not been stable. We do encourage volunteers to form these kinds of groups, but it is a lot of work.
We have formed support groups. But support groups for men tend to be insular. What is needed now by men is outreach. By contrast to men's support groups, Women's support groups acted as a catalyst to create enthusiasm for going public. "The personal is the political" was the battle cry of women during the 1970's when these women's groups were so successful.
COMMITTEE ON GENDER BIAS IN THE COURTS - In 1980 the N.O.W. Legal Defense and Education Fund teamed up with the National Association of Women Judges to form a program where the goal was suppose to be to promote equality for women and men in the courts. Under this guise they are seeking to get every state to create commissions on gender bias in the courts. So far most states have completed their reports. Sex discrimination against men has yet to be dealt with in a meaningful way by almost all of them.
Several exceptions exist. NCFM managed to get heard by the Gender Bias Task Force in Texas (1993) and Equal Rights For Fathers, Iowa, got heard before their state task force. The main difference in presentations was that Equal Rights For Fathers, Iowa, spoke only about divorce issues. NCFM, on the other hand, addressed not only divorce issues, but a whole range of other issues as well.
The importance of these commission reports is in establishing an atmosphere for reform and in acting as knowledgeable guidelines in the formulation of future policies. Not all of the commissions have presented honest findings. A case in point is the State of Maryland. Jon Ryan, our committee chairman on gender bias in the courts, reviewed the raw data and compared it to what the commission said they had found. What Jon found in the draft of the report were conclusions blatantly unsupported by the commissions own raw data. Jon was able to review the raw data, so he tabulated the number of times that inaccuracies were presented. He found that better than 30% of the time the commission presented inaccurate data. Was it a coincidence? Just a mistake? Were they on drugs? What did they have to gain by presenting inaccurate information?
With respect to how gender bias in the courts affect men here are a few of our concerns: Why do men out number women 25 to 1 in the prison system? Why will a prosecutor most often offer a woman accomplice in a crime a deal in order to more successfully prosecute her male partner? The reverse is almost never true. Men draw longer sentences than women for the same crime. A woman is more likely than a man to be placed on probation and not be sent to jail. And, then, of course, there is the whole issue of the awarding of child custody.
For some five years NCFM sponsored its own fact finding task force and produced original research. The research from this committee is available. Go to our research page, Research Page, to review some of the many projects sponsored by NCFM. CAREER DAY FOR BOYS - In 1997, NCFM piloted a project that mirrored, "Take Your Daughters To Work Day". The date was November 14, 1997. The project was targeted at Lucent Technologies in Chicago. Lucent is one of the very few corporations in America to sponsor a men's group aimed at providing male advocacy. The corporate group is called, "Lumen" (as in, Lucent Men). Employees were encouraged (and many participated) to take their sons to work to experience the work place.
