I work at "Lucent Technologies", which split from AT&T. After seeing the women's club at work bring in speakers and sponsor events, I decided to start a men's club at work. It is called "LUMEN" (Lucent MEN). The women's club at work is called WILL, which stands for "Women In Leadership at Lucent". For years there has been a "Take Our Daughters to Work Day". Early in 1997 the women's club at work contacted me because many people, including women members of their club, complained because they could not bring their sons. They asked me to start a separate day for boys. So, I asked the leadership of the National Coalition of Free Men if NCFM would sponsor a national day for sons. The board thought it was a good idea and I was elected to setup a web site for the day. See S.O.S..
I then started to prepare for boys to come to Lucent on the 14th of Nov 1997. This was not approved, but there was some discussion. The concern expressed on the part of management was that it would be too expensive to have two separate days where children would come to work. So management directed the men's club and women's club at work to work together to come up with a proposal for one common day. Well, the women's club much preferred keeping things as they have been, with "girls only" on their day. After all, to be faithful to the "owners" of the day, one must follow the web page instructions and keep girls from the negative effects of the presence of boys. As President of LUMEN meeting with WILL, I agreed to jointly telling management that we preferred separate days. But, management insisted on one common day, for economic reasons. So, we could do nothing but agree to one common day. But WILL had some reservations and concerns. So, I suggested that, in order to allow WILL to help "protect the integrity of their programs", LUMEN would have its events in one building, and WILL would have its events in another. Thus, boys and girls could be kept separate, like they wanted.
In life you have to compromise to get some of what you want. LUMEN could not have boys come on the nationally designated day. The Friday after Veterans Day was chosen as the national "Career Day for Our Sons" so as to tie it in with a symbolic tradition of male sexual role models and sacrifice. Remembering how males are the ones to be drafted to die in war is a symbolic reminder of how male sexual role models call upon the male gender to sacrifice "for the good of society". We even worked to allow WILL to keep their program with the character as dictated by the web site for the day. But, we won a very important victory for the Sons of the employees of Lucent Technologies at our work site. We won the right to also bring our Sons to work and encourage our Sons to stay in school and think about a Career.
"Career Day for Our Sons" CDFOS(sm) is a "Service Mark" of the National Coalition of Free Men. The day provided a service to the next generation of males. It is not only a time to show boys that they are valued and encouraged to stay in school and find a career. It is also a time to introduce boys to the men's movement and men's issues. There are men's organizations which form local support groups to help men in family and emotional matters. Boys need to be taught that it is socially OK for males to ask other males for help, and for males to work with other males for the protection of the male gender. The web page advocates that men's clubs at work sites bring in speakers from men's organizations to talk to boys about the men's movement and men's issues.
A part of the activities for the day may also be a talk on "Sexual Ethics", which will explain how Verbal Sexual Abuse of males is a form of Sexual Harassment that males don't have to accept. Boys can be taught to fight back legally and socially to protect themselves from verbal abuse and other covert abuses. It is a day to heal the wounds boys have experienced. It is a day to rally to the cause of Saving Our Sons and the next generation of males.
I ask that you the reader of this do what you can, out of compassion for Our Sons and the next generation of males. If you can, try to have "Career Day for Our Sons" events at your work site. Get as many men and women and other organizations to participate in "Career Day for Our Sons". Lets make this a national rally to Save Our Sons from the war against the male gender.
Perhaps we should wear "SOS" badges?
