It was Tom’s work with traumatized men over the last 25 years that helped bring him in contact with NCFM of which he’s been for over 10 years. This work gave him a clear picture of what is normally hidden from view; the hardships and discrimination that men face all too often when it comes to dealing with emotions and suffering. NCFM was the only national group that was chartered to address this sexism.

Tom Golden, LCSW is an author, speaker and psychotherapist. His book, Swallowed by a Snake: The Gift of the Masculine Side of Healing focuses on the unique ways that men and boys heal from trauma and loss and has been acclaimed by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and many others. Tom has been teaching this material to mental health professionals around the world and has enjoyed presenting workshops in the United States, Canada, and Australia, having been named the “1999 International Grief Educator” by the Australian Centre for Grief Education and offering workshops in five Australian cities. His workshops are known to be entertaining and informative. Tom brings a gentle sense of humor and a gift for storytelling as he draws on his twenty-five years of practical, hands-on clinical experience in working with the bereaved. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and U.S. News and World Report, as well as on CNN and CBS Evening News. In 1995 Tom created the internet’s first interactive web page for grieving people webhealing.com and designed and started the world’s first internet memorial page, the Place to Honor Grief.  Both continue to function in supporting the bereaved.

Tom was recently appointed to the newly formed Maryland Commission for Men’s Health. He lives near Washington D.C. and enjoys gardening, hand drumming, photography and delights in his wife, son, and daughter.

    Dear Tom,

This is from Scott Berger who used to work at Capital Hospital. I have been thinking about you lately. I don’t think I got the chance to tell how sorry I was about the way that agency treated you. Regardless, I live. in Norfolk Virginia now following my wife who is on tenure track at ODU. Why I was thinking about you is what I have experienced down here working with African-American kids who have personality disorders and are at threat of being removed from their school or home. It is really heartbreaking witnessing first graders being taught by a majority of teachers who are literally tramuatzed. They constantly scream at the kids sometimes with malice in their voice. The admistratord and teachers have confused acting out of their triggers that none of the kids caused and mistaking it for good classroom management. After twelve years of continually being reinforced by negative punishment it is no wonder why there are so many problems in this population. I have found thier mothers and grandmothers also acting out of trauma. Anyway as I said I was thinking of you as I have experienced this eye opening horror. Hope you are weir and thriving. Peace.
