Dating coach DeAnna Lorraine has produced an excellent book. One can regret the rarity of such optimistic yet informed calls to love but one cannot deny the importance of such a work. Going your own way is understandable but people who miss the opportunity to open their heart to a loving relationship miss ever so much. DeAnna could use a good editor, is much more worried about the harms of pornography than I am, and the book would benefit from a more professional approach that eschews smiley faces and similar such things. Still, in the end what matters are the message a book conveys and the heart behind it, and on both grounds this author truly excels.

Apparently for those under 21, dating isn’t even commonplace any more. And more is the pity, as the author writes, relating the heroic story of how her grandfather eventually earned the heart of her grandmother and then the couple loved each other for 63 years.

DeAnna ticks off the endless data proving that children are ever so much better off living in a home with both parents: dramatically lower rates of pregnancy, suicide, homelessness, and perpetration of rape, and greatly enhanced lifetime income.

Seemingly even the most obvious point is no longer common-sensical these days so the author goes ahead and makes the point, noting that previously, men voluntarily served as unpaid bodyguards to women, and men and women worked as a team. While women didn’t have all the same rights they didn’t have all the same responsibilities either. Most men are, the author writes, “incredibly loyal, non-judgmental, generous, helpful, protective, hard-working, and eager to make women happy.” Yet suddenly previously approved, honorable and romantic behaviors by men are now being criticized as “sexist.” The author has a good point: “You can’t just tell men that all of their innate masculine tendencies are terrible and oppressive 95% of the time, but then at certain, random times when you really need something from them, or you need them to exhibit that trait, you say you want that trait.”

As befits the author’s job as a dating and relationship coach, she provides very helpful sets of myths men have about women and vice versa, as well as very wise short lists of tips for men and women in search of love. Women and men are made for each other! How simple! Thank you so much for reminding us, Deanna.
