NCFM’s position on toxic masculinity… stop male bashing

toxic masculinity

Masculinity is not toxic. What is toxic are the hate mongers who try to group an entire sex in a dishonest and disparaging way, thereby committing a hate speech against millions of innocent males.

We recently received an email request to include on our library page a link to a resource, Promoting Healthy Masculinity Among Boys.

“Hi there,

My name is Scary Jane (not her real name), and I’m reaching out on behalf of OnlineCounselingPrograms.com (the real website). I came across your Library (NCFM’s), and I was wondering who would be the best person to contact about this page?

That would be me.

Scary wrote,

I wanted to share a recent resource, “Redefining Manhood: How to Promote Healthy Masculinity Among Boys”, which addresses toxic masculinity and how counselors and other individuals can help young men understand the problem. This piece promotes healthy masculinity, how it differs for each individual, and how counselors can help reduce the negative elements of masculinity. You can find the full article here: https://onlinecounselingprograms.com/blog/promoting-healthy-masculinity/

Would you consider sharing this on your library?

Thanks for your time,
Scary Jane

Hmm…probably not. But I thought I’d put it to our national board of directors just to be on the safe side. I asked all Board Members the following:

“I’m curious as to how each of you might handle this request. We don’t have an official position on “toxic masculinity” and I’m certain none of us support the term. I would appreciate your comments.”

Responses came fast, furious and left little doubt where we stood. In fact, considerable discussion resulted in the following article by Board Member Ray Blumhorst:

STOP MALE BASHING!

Masculinity is not a pejorative!

The term “toxic masculinity” seeks to link bad behavior with the condition of being male (masculinity) as if there’s inherently bad (toxicity) in all masculinity. There’s good and bad in all of humanity with no one sex on the whole behaving more or less perniciously than the other. Indeed, prejudice, discrimination, vilification, abuse and violence against men (like that foisted in the term toxic masculinity) does have a causal role in the misbehavior of some males and there’s already way too much male-bashing in the lives of males. That hatefulness should be what is primarily confronted and eliminated, instead of heaping more misandry on already victimized and/or innocent males with terms that vilify like “toxic masculinity.”

Vilifying masculinity as toxic is a vile deceit that must be confronted for the pure evil it is and eradicated. For good men and women to remain silent against the violent assault on masculinity that’s inherent in the two words, “toxic masculinity,” is acquiescence to that abominable hatefulness.

Masculinity is not toxic. What is toxic are the hate mongers who prejudicially try to stereotype the entire male sex in a dishonest and disparaging way, thereby committing a hate speech against many millions of good, decent males.

So, Ms. Scary Jane, the answer is no. However, if you would like us to post a similar article re Toxic Femininity…well, I’d have to ask the Board about that too. Just out of curiosity, how would you feel about that?

Sincerely,

Harry Crouch, President

Juxtaposition is so frequently revealing, isn’t it?
