We received an email from someone concerned about Walmart offering products with sayings like “MAKE BOYS CRY,” “HOW TO MAKE BOYS CRY,” and “I LOVE TO MAKE BOYS CRY.” Walmart also offers a similar line of products for making girls cry.
The sender noticed a “MAKE BOYS CRY” bag being carried by someone at his health club and thought we would find it harmful and demeaning. True. He believed that such language, seen by a boy (or girl), could be hurtful. Also true
This situation reminded me of the “THROW ROCKS AT LITTLE BOYS” craze in the late 90s. Radio host, columnist, and then NCFM member, men’s advocate Glenn Sacks championed this cause and faced considerable criticism from those who felt he was whining instead of taking an obviously protective stance for little boys and the rest of us. I noted this in the letter below that I sent to Doug McMillon, President and CEO of Walmart Inc.
