Men’s rights march in the streets in Costa Rica. http://insidecostarica.com/2012/11/25/dozens-march-to-demand-rights-equal-treatment-for-men/

November 25th, 2012 (InsideCostaRica.com) A group of over 60 people marched through Paseo Colon yesterday, with the message “we are functional parents, not ATM machines.”

The march was to demand men’s rights, and to demand the creation of an institute that could provide them with protection and support when assaulted by their partners or facing unfair legal treatment.

The protest began at about 10:00am yesterday in Paseo Colon, and proceeded towards the central Park in San Jose. There, the group spoke about various problems that men face in a family environment.

Eugenia Quesada, director of the foundation “Support to Men Institute” (FUNDIAPHO, in Spanish), said they are demanding the government to create an “Institute for Men.”

“We also want to eliminate jail for not paying alimony and child support, demand serious punishment for noncompliance of visiting hours (for parent-child visits), and we want the domestic violence act to be applied equally to both sexes, and not only to be for women’s protection,” she added.

According to the director of FUNDIAPHO, they receive about 9 men per day requesting legal and psychological counsel.

Yesterday’s march was dedicated to Isai Ramirez, a man who spent 6 months in jail because he was not able to pay 8 million colons (about $16,000) in alimony that he owed his ex wife. According to Quesada, facing jail, he ran and hid in the mountains to avoid arrest.

“We want others to see the situations that many men go through, with domestic violence, child support and alimony payments that they can’t make, as well as other situations,” said Quesada.

Both men and women participated in the march.

Male rights campaigners are setting up an anti-feminist political party and plan to stand against Harriet Harman and other prominent feminists at the next General Election.
The ‘men power’ is being orchestrated by Mike Buchanan, 55, a former business consultant who opposes tokenism and says ‘our political elite has become detached from reality with its state- sponsored feminism’.
Mr Buchanan is not some fruitcake of the Monster Raving Loony party ilk. A bookish fellow from Bath, full of statistics, he has recently given evidence to a parliamentary select committee.

He has also been interviewed on Radio 4 and has spoken at political party conference fringe events about the Establishment’s demands for more women in boardrooms.
Mr Buchanan chairs the Merit In Business campaign, which wants company directors appointed on ability rather than gender. He also argues that men’s jobs and men’s health have been imperilled by officialdom’s default feminism.

‘I now have the money in place, donated by supporters, to register a political party,’ he says.
‘Feminism is a reason for many male outcomes in modern Britain being poor. Male suicides are 3.7 times higher. More than 60  per cent of public-sector workers are women, 90 per cent of homeless people are men, 60 per cent of university students are female. For every seven people registered as unemployed, four are men.
‘Spending on diagnosing male-specific cancers is small compared with that on female- specific cancers.’
Mr Buchanan has yet to decide on a name for his party but says: ‘We will be neither Left nor Right.
Although feminism obviously has Left-wing roots, the working class has suffered most from it. Militant feminism has assaulted the family, too.’
Mr Buchanan is thinking of putting up a candidate against David Cameron. He accuses the Prime Minister of ‘pursuing the hate-filled agendas of Harriet Harman and her ilk’.
‘Female-on-male domestic violence is as common as male-on-female, yet the provision of sheltered housing for women hugely exceeds that for men,’ he says. ‘Militant feminism is largely funded by government domestic-violence grants. Yet feminists continue to moan about “the patriarchy”.

I am not a man, but I wanted to post this. I read this in an article in my Sex and Gender class at my University. I am currently studying issues relating to both sexes and their gender roles, as well as the ideas of Feminism and Patriarchy.

    I can appreciate this:

“We, as men, want to take back our full humanity. We no longer want to strain to compete to live up to an impossible oppressive masculine image- strong, silent, cool, handsome, unemotional, successful, master of women, leader of men, wealthy, brilliant, athletic and “heavy”. We want to relate to both women and men in more human ways- warmth, sensitivity, emotion and honesty. We want to share our feelings with one another to break down the walls and grow closer. We want to be equal with women and end destructive competitive relationships between men.”(Doyle 2000)

I can’t help but notice how some people on this site (from BOTH directions [men and women]) feel so angry towards one another, and this anger is not helping anyone. While it is justified that both men AND women should feel angry towards the SITUATIONS that WE have presented OURSELVES with, it is also a good idea to begin to set aside our differences and begin to WORK TOGETHER to form working and equal relationships with each other.

Unfortunately, I recognize and realize that not everyone on either side will do this. If this continues, we may never progress forward. 🙁 This deeply concerns me. As a woman, I believe that women and men should have equality, however, I believe that equality should be leveled and realistic for both. It is not fair to name call one another, to back hand one another and treat each other like dirt. And the truth is, we do. We treat each other horribly, and blame each other for our problems. The thing is, BOTH sides are correct and BOTH sides are wrong. There are extremes and there are realistic problems here.

We will never progress forward if we continue to fight and point fingers. I say this to EVERYONE. NOT JUST MEN AND NOT JUST WOMEN.

On this site, I see things that are real and I see things that are extreme and biased. I see the same thing on some extreme and radical feminist sites as well. The issues presented ARE issues, but some of them are inaccurately extreme. I noticed some on your “reproductive rights” page as well as some of your others. And do not feel I am taking sides, because I am not.

I think there is a lot of missing education for EVERYONE.

We are our own worst enemies, and we are destroying ourselves.

Man can not live without woman, and woman can not live without man. We are supposed to compliment each other, but in reality we do nothing but fight each other.

I know some of you will probably point at me and call me a feminist bitch liar, but I am not being biased in my opinions. I am merely making an educated observation about real issues that both sexes and gender roles are having.

    • NCFM on December 15, 2012 at 10:39 AM

No, I don’t think you are a “feminist bitch liar”. Your points are well taken. However, with few exceptions, NCFM makes concerted efforts to be as fair as possible. Unfortunately, sometimes that’s not possible, especially in situations in which it is clear that evil is at work. Sometimes it’s not practical to be nice because all it achieves is more abuse. Sometimes one has to take a stand and say “no more”. For over 30 years our society has waged war on men and boys in every aspect of our culture. There are powerful forces at work to dis empower males further. That said, I still agree with most of what you say above, appreciate your comments, and hope you help keep dialog here civil. Thank you for your post.

women in my perspective are like vaccumes they suck the life out of men and then they say fuck it and leave with 1/2 of everything that is rightfully yours. women are the ones who choose to have an abortion not the men that is not fair to any extent of nature. and if the woman chooses to have a child then your stuck paying child support. if a woman wants a divorce then she will get 1/2 of everything that is your money items in a house etc. women are the couse 70 percent of all domectic viloence in america. women do this all the time all they have to do is say to the police that you hit them and it doesent matter if you did it or not your ass is being hauled off to jail.i read a story about a man who had sex with one of his student at a hihgschool not sur wich one but the man has to serve 30 years in prision. now just a few days age a woman was proven guilty of having a sexual affair with one of her students her sentence was only house arrest unfair treatment of men is eventually what will destroy the court systems and such

Real women confide in their partner in issues regarding abortion. However, if the male is not present (abandoned, etc), then it should be solely up to the woman to decide. Honestly, abortion is not a way out, although I approve of abortion in cases of rape, the life of the woman or fetus is at risk, or dire circumstances where having a child would not have any positive outcome.

Please understand that not all women are flaming hoebags, and I understand that not all men are bastards either. Certainly, there are horrible people on both sides of the spectrum, but it is not fair to lump everyone in with those who make it out to be bad for everyone else.

I see the ALPHA PHI ALPHA’s have asked the president to start a national counsel on men and boys to show our young men the good things about being male, and this request was met by silence. We all see the racism but not the sexism. Every opportunity he gets he degrades men and fathers. 2008 the president spoke on father’s day and had nothing positive to say to all of us good fathers struggling and striving to raise their children. I know his father left his mother when he was very young but so did mine and that is no excuse to degrade all men and boys. Most of us turn a blind eye to this fact because he is the first black president. But this should also be an opportunity for him to make sure that our young men get the same help from our elected officials as our young ladies.

Honestly, when it comes to domestic violence, if men were not so stupid as to hide our "pride" when we are abused and just come out and say what happened, then there wouldn't be so much controversy. However, men pride ourselves on our so called "man-hood", which gets us absolutely no where when it comes to our own health.

I feel for these men, but I also feel for the women who suffer as well. It is NEVER okay to abuse your spouse, male or female. It is HUMAN rights, not just women or men rights.

    • Marc on April 22, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Blaming men is just as wrong as blaming women. Both men and women often don't come forward for various reasons. Men haven't had the massive public outreach in the media that women have had. Women didn't used to come forward before that, or not nearly as much. Plus men are afraid of being falsely accused and arrested. Often the abuses threatens to say he was the violent one.

    • Marc on April 16, 2012 at 6:43 PM

Devon, do you similarly blame women when they don’t come forward? Women didn’t used to seek help until there was major public outreach and awareness campaigns in the media and education. There hasn’t been the same thing for men. And men are ridiculred, disbelieved, denied services, and even falsely accused. They face the risk of being arrested themselves if they report it, under the primary aggressor doctrine. I don’t agree with blaminb men’s ego for their not coming forward any more than blaming women for not coming forward. There are many reasons for it. And in fact, today about one fourth of police reports for DV are coming from men. That still hasn’t changed the way the law is, the way state-funded shelters practice, or how the media portrays the problem. The problem is much bigger than just men not coming forward.
